Running for Choc kids
20 May 2008
Witness Reporter

Two Pietermaritzburg men are running the Comrades
Marathon on June 15 to raise funds for children with cancer.
Running partners Mark Duncan (42), a self-employed engineer, and Mike
Acutt (47), a bursar/business manager at an independent girls’ high
school, will be running their fourth and third Comrades Marathons
respectively.
Duncan, who is also the national vice-chairman of the Childhood Cancer
Foundation (Choc), told The Witness that they chose the charity as
their beneficiary after his daughter, Kayleigh, was diagnosed with
leukaemia nine years ago.
Kayleigh has recovered and is now a healthy 12-year-old. Duncan said
that rural children with cancer often spend a whole day travelling to a
treatment centre many hundreds of kilometres from home. “[Children]
spend weeks, sometimes months, living in a hospital while on treatment.
It often appears hopeless, but through the support from organisations
like Choc, these children can receive the medical attention they need.”
Both men said they love running and support what Choc does for the
children and their families. They have set themselves a target of R50
000.
“If just 500 people donate R100 we will achieve our target.”
Anyone who wants to donate funds can visit their online donation site www.backabuddy.co.za/markandmike.
